Resident Counselor - Job Description

The Summer Program of the Presbytery of Arkansas at Ferncliff seeks to be faithful to the gospel of Jesus Christ. It provides a quality camping experience for children, youth and families which reflects the Presbyterian Church (USA)'s understanding of education.

A Resident Counselor is responsible, under the Summer Program Director, for the implementation of the camping experience for the children, youth, and families who attend the summer camping program during June and July. The Summer Program Director is responsible for training, supervising and evaluating the Resident Counselors.

Who Are We Looking For?
  • Enthusiastic, devoted Christians eager for challenge, personal growth and leadership development. It is ideal, but not essential, if they are Presbyterians.
  • Dedicated, mature college-aged individuals who have a love for children, camping, and the out-of-doors. Staff must have good judgment and accept the responsibility of being positive role models for children.
  • Team players that are both tolerant and sensitive to the needs of others in our staff community. We rely on the summer staff to provide a multicultural family atmosphere for our camping participants.

Responsibilities:

  • serve as a "counselor in residence" to a cabin group of 8-10 campers
  • serve as "co-counselor" with a counselor of the opposite sex to form "family groups" of campers during some of the camps
  • attend the Resident Counselor training session
  • attend the pre-camp orientation scheduled just prior to each camp
  • accompany campers and be responsible for them at all times (e.g. mealtimes, swimming, crafts, boating, biking, rest periods, showers, bedtime)
  • function as a friend and surrogate parent to assigned campers
  • monitor camper's general health and condition and report any matters of concern to the Summer Program Director and/or nurse
  • be on site and available for service at all times, assisting the center staff as time permits and need demands, including but not limited to assisting in food service operation, housekeeping, and grounds maintenance
  • be at all times alert to areas/issues needing the attention of the Summer Program Director
