Solar Under the Sun
HELP US LIGHT THE WORLD!
Solar Under the Sun
Solar Under the Sun, a new ministry of the Synod of the Sun, Presbyterian Church (USA), is designed to provide solar power to nonprofit groups—no matter where they might be—to help them alleviate hardship while also becoming better stewards of God’s green earth. As Christians, we can join together with those in need to share both the power of the sun and the grace of the risen Son.
Solar Under the Sun is initially working in partnership with the Synod of Living Waters to augment the Living Waters for the World (LWW) program. LWW constructs simple but effective water treatment facilities. Most of these facilities, however, get their electricity from gasolinepowered generators. The ability to operate for even a few hours a day on solar-produced electricity saves money on fuel and protects against shortages. This also spreads the use of clean, renewable power—an outreach in and of itself.
Our initial focus is threefold:
Provide training in partnership development, spiritual education, and solar power installation, operation, and maintenance
Offer direction in obtaining materials and supplies at cost when available and using in-country supplies whenever possible
Establish relationships among those in need of electrical power, the Synods of the Sun and Living Waters, other PC(USA) and ecumenical mission efforts, those experienced in the uses of solar power, and individuals and organizations that feel called to this ministry
Eventually, Solar Under the Sun will also help provide electricity for everything from remote schools and health clinics, to irrigation pumps, to cell phones for reliable communication.

Cost
• $500 for one registratant from church/organization
• $450 if church/organization is sending more than one person
Cost includes training materials, room & board. Room & board is double occupancy only.

Solar 1
The Solar 1 Workshop will offer an informative, instructive, and “enlightening” opportunity to learn the skill in organizing, developing, and establishing a project partnership with a community in another part of the world. Not only will participants be illumined with insights about forming and nuturing mission teams, but they will also learn how to evaluate potential locations, to manage a solar project, and to negotiate a covenant agreement with a partner-in-need. Come and join us as we seek to refl ect the light of the Lord.
Solar 2
Students in Solar 2 will learn to assemble a small (1 - 6 photovoltaic panels) off-grid solar energy system for use in an in-country institutional setting. Emphasis is on systems to power clean water systems, but other applications such as lighting will be included. The class includes hands-on experience with SUTS’s solar trailer, assessing the electrical load, understanding system components, system design, and safety and maintenance. Instructors in Solar 2 have experience with construction of US and Haitian systems
